In 1984, Y&R longtime cast member Jeanne Cooper pitched an unusual idea to CBS executives. Cooper was planning on having a facelift, so she suggested that her character, Katherine Chancellor, have one as well. The powers-that-be agreed, and the story of Katherine having cosmetic surgery was written into the show. Katherine's facelift aired live on national television, a daytime first. Says Cooper, "It was groundbreaking, of course. After the facelift, everyone came out of their closet [to admit they'd had one.] Before this, it was like the Hollywood actresses who went away and came back with a child: you never saw them pregnant, because they hid it." Katherine's cosmetic surgery is certainly the most up-"lifting" moment on our list.
