the 100 most memorable moments in soap history
Stavares "Steve" Andropolous (Frank Runyeon) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Stewart (Meg Ryan) were ATWT's most famous contribution to the 1980s supercouple trend. Like many popular twosomes, they endured many breakups and makeups; disapproving siblings and other lovers kept them apart for years. But when Betsy learned that the father of her daughter, Danielle, was Steve and not Craig Montgomery, Steve and Betsy were finally able to get married. The biggest soap wedding after Luke and Laura, the episode drew 20 million viewers, making it the second highest-rated hour in American soap history. Steve and Betsy's romance eventually ended, but Meg Ryan's career was just beginning. After leaving ATWT, she of course starred in a string of successful movies and became a romantic comedy It Girl for much of the 1990s.
