the 100 most memorable moments in soap history
Maria Grey (Eva LaRue) and her newborn daughter, Maddie, accompanied her husband, Edmund, (John Callahan) and his co-worker (and former flame) Brooke (Julia Barr) on a business trip. A terrible explosion and crash on the flight home put Maria's and Maddie's lives in danger. Edmund was among the injured, so it was up to Brooke to save Maria and Maddie. When it became apparent to Maria that she and her baby couldn't both survive, she did what any good mother would do; she sacrificed her life for her daughter's. In an emotionally wrenching moment, Maria told Brooke to take Maddie and tearfully pleaded with Brooke to take care of her husband and child. Brooke begged Maria to hold on so she could be saved, but Maria knew it was impossible. Then, Maria fell to her "death." This moment kicked off one of AMC's best storylines of the 90s and brought the superb Barr her second Emmy for Best Supporting Actress. But, more than anything, that moment showed the lengths a mother would go to for her child.
